Amsterdam-based artist Jacco Olivier (b. 1972) fuses painting and filmmaking in colorfully textured canvases. He photographs each iteration and brushstroke, combining the various compositional stages and their liquid color into films. Within his works, Olivier often repositions traditional painting subjects such as bathers, landscapes, and portraiture, abstracting them with color grouping and loose paint formations. The animated histories of Olivier’s works are microcosmic presentations of informal narratives—the final product, halfway between a story and a painting.
